Before any images can be added they need to be prepared and uploaded to the Site Editor. The first step of doing this involves generating computer image files of suitable size, dimensions and format.

Pre-printed paper items such as photographs diagrams or drawings need to be scanned and saved on your computer. A resolution of around 72 pixels per inch (28 pixels per cm) is ideal for images appearing on the Internet. The Site Editor will accept images with a file size of up to 100 KB, though we recommend no more than 40 KB files so that image download times for users are kept low.

To ensure images appear properly on completed pages we also recommend that they be no more than 400 pixels high or wide. Your graphics editing program should be able to show you how large your images are and allow you to re-size them if required.

The Site Editor accepts JPEG (.jpg) and GIF (.gif) image files - both of which are very common formats on the Internet.

On the Page Listing screen click the View image list link to bring up the Image Listing screen. If your site's template includes pre-uploaded images they will already be listed in a table beneath the Upload button. Uploaded images are listed in alphabetical order by name.

To upload a new image:

Image listing screen
  • In the Upload new image section enter a short name for it in the Description box.
  • Click the browse button to bring up the Choose file box. Locate the file on your computer, highlight it and click Open to select.
  • Enter some Alternative text. This should be text that within about 20 words describes the subject of the image. This information will help Internet users with text only browsers or viewing the page in text only mode identify what the image is about.
  • Click the Upload button to load the image into the Site Editor. If the upload is successful the message "Image Uploaded" appears near the top of the screen and the new image is added to the list.
  • Note: The Site Editor will not allow you to upload an image if there is an existing one with the same name. Use the 'replace' facility described below if you need to swap one image for another.

Once you have finished organising images, follow the Page Listing link near the bottom of the window to return to the Page Listing screen.
