Your template is likely to have been set up with a page area specifically for you to place a list of links to other pages or sections of your site. Such a list is known as a navigation bar. As suggested this bar is best located in the same place on all of your pages to allow internet users to move easily around from place to place and find information quickly. For this reason a navigation bar is a particularly important element to include.

Automatic navigation allows you a choice of different formats of navigation and will also automatically create it using all the pages you have created on you site(apart from the pages which you have purposely hidden).

Manual navigation allows you to choose the pages you want to be displayed in your navigation, as it may sometimes not be appropriate to list all your pages. Manual navigation also lets you add subheadings from the current page to the navigation.

  • Select the Navigation (manual) element from the Insert item screen and click the Add Item button. This brings up the navigation Edit item screen.
  • In the box labelled "Lists of all pages and sections" is a list of all your current site pages plus the headings and subheadings contained within them (the items listed starting with a hyphen: '-'). The initially empty box labelled "Pages to show" to its left is where links you select for display in the navigation bar will be shown.
  • Select page or sections to display from the "Lists of all pages and sections" box by highlighting them. Several links can be selected together by holding down the [CTRL] key while clicking on each one in turn.
  • Click the "Add button" to add selected links to the Pages to show box.
  • If you highlight a link you have selected in the Pages to show box and then add a further link to the list it will be added under the link highlighted rather than by default to the bottom of the list.
  • To remove a link from the "Links to show" box highlight it and click the Remove button.
  • To arrange the order of items in the Pages to show box highlight an item to be moved and then use the the Move Up and Move Down buttons to shift its position in the list.
  • The option -Separator- when added to the "Pages to show" box inserts a blank line in the finished navigation bar. This could be useful for visually organising links into groups.
  • Select the navigation style if a choice is available.
  • Select the navigation bars alignment. The default alignment is left.
  • Once complete, click the Store Changes button to save and return to the Page Editor screen.
